Goodwill In Action
to prevent suicide
A person dies by suicide every 40 seconds globally and every 90 minutes in the UK
Suicide is a leading cause of premature mortality worldwide, with more than 6,500 people dying by suicide in the UK annually.
We believe it doesn’t have to be this way and that suicide can be preventable.
Our Response
Suicide prevention is everyone's responsibility
Goodwill In Action To Prevent Suicide CIO is a South West Devon-based charity originally founded in 2020. We believe suicide is preventable. The causes of suicide are complex; it usually occurs gradually, progressing from suicidal thoughts to planning to attempting suicide and finally dying by suicide.
Behind every statistic is an individual, a family and a community devastated by their loss.
Stigma, particularly surrounding mental distress/disorders and suicide, means many people thinking of taking their own life or who have attempted suicide are not seeking help. They are therefore not getting the support they need. It is stated that 2/3 of people who take their own lives are not known to their GP or medical services.
The prevention of suicide is not being adequately addressed due to the stigma and taboo in many communities to openly discuss it. Therefore, raising community awareness and breaking down the taboo is important in making progress in preventing suicide.

There comes a point where we need to stop just pulling people out of the river. We need to go upstream and find out why they are falling in.
